What is pipeline pigging?
Pigging is a technique that uses a device, or tool called a Pipeline Integrity Gauge, commonly known as a ‘pig’, to clean, prepare or internally inspect pipelines. The ‘pig’ is a cylindrical device that moves through the pipeline to remove or detect any build-ups within the pipe that could cause reduced performance, increased costs and corrosion that can result in leaks or cracks within the pipes. The ‘pig’ can be driven through the pipeline using either fluid or compressed air.
What are Smart Pigging solutions?
Smart pigging enhances the pipeline pigging processes by for example providing an innovative, efficient, environmentally friendly method for cleaning pipelines from small to large diameters, using air pigging technology. In this method, compressed air is used as the propulsion medium to propel the tool or ‘pig’ through the pipeline. This technique can also be utilised to provide the drive medium for our commissioning and survey capabilities.

Our innovative approach to the cleaning and relining of these large-scale pipes, we were chosen as the contractor for modernising the Vyrnwy Aqueduct pipelines in phase 1 of the works between Malpas and Tarporley. The client saw the potential in using innovative air pigging technology, so we partnered with iNPIPE to design and manufacture bespoke air pigs to clean and monitor one of the lines involved in the project. The use of this technology, substantially reduced the project’s carbon footprint and saving tonnes of water and time.
