Avove Finance Graduate Encourages Next Generation of STEM Students

Finance Graduate Showcases STEM Careers to School Students

At Avove, we are passionate about nurturing the early careers of the next generation and inspiring young people to pursue opportunities in STEM. That’s why we seek opportunities to engage with young people who are either still in education or are about to make their first step into their career to showcase the pathways on offer in utilities.

As part of our STEM ambassadors programme, our Finance graduate, James, recently visited a local school to demonstrate to students the exciting opportunities to be found within STEM careers.

What is the Avove STEM Ambassadors programme?

Our STEM Ambassador programme was created to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals through developing the skills of young people, demonstrating our careers and what we do as a company. The programme involves our colleagues volunteering their time to attend or run an event that raises awareness of the link between STEM subjects and future career opportunities. Examples of events include:

  • Attending career fairs and events in schools, colleges and universities
  • Delivering presentations or webinars
  • Mentoring

Many of our colleagues have already signed up to the programme to demonstrate their commitment to advancing the careers of the next generation.

It is well known that our sector faces a skills shortage across the UK, and this combined with a lack of careers education in schools and less young people choosing to study STEM subjects means we need our amazing colleagues to showcase Avove and the utilities industry as a fantastic and rewarding place to begin a career.  The aim is to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals, and develop young people’s skills, confidence, and mindsets to build successful careers in STEM and bring these subjects to life.

Showcasing STEM Career Opportunities in Utilities

STEM Ambassador and Avove Finance Graduate, James, recently represented our business and the utilities sector at a career fair at West Derby High School in Liverpool. As a graduate, James has first-hand experience of our Early Careers programmes at Avove and what they have to offer young people who are taking their first steps into their career.

As a STEM ambassador, James organised to attend the event to demonstrate the different types of careers available to students who were looking to pursue STEM subjects at a higher level. During the session, James spoke with a number of pupils in Year 9 and in the school’s sixth form; two pivotal periods within education where students will be making key decisions about their next steps and future careers. Students had the opportunity to find out more about a career in utilities and the different roles available within the industry. They also had the chance to ask James questions to gain valuable insights into the sector, his experience and his advice.

Speaking about the event, James said:

“The event was a fun experience. Science, technology, engineering and maths are so important and the jobs that relate to those subjects are key for moving life forward. I’ve always been passionate about STEM subjects and being able to help other young people develop a passion for these subjects and their associated careers is important to me. It was great to engage with the students about STEM subjects and showcase what we do as a company.”
