Delivering a new flood control system for Scottish Water

Overview

Scottish Water is trusted to care for the water on which Scotland depends on – delivering 1.52 billion litres of clear, fresh drinking water and removing 1.10 billion litres of wastewater which Scottish Water treats and returns safely to the environment – daily. The water and wastewater services they deliver are vital to the daily lives of 2.61 million households and more than 150,000 businesses.

Scottish Water required a new system to reduce flooding in Glasgow.

The Challenge

Scottish Water had a flooding issue at Nelson Street in Baillieston, Glasgow. As part of SW Glasgow Strategic Studies (GSS), Scottish Water wanted to improve its systems to reduce the amount of flooding in the area and to manage and maintain its reputation.

Benefits

Working with Scottish Water, and managing several sub-contractors, we delivered a capital investment project to resolve a flooding issue, improve systems and increase network capacity.

  • We innovatively upgraded their systems, including 200 metres of the sewer network
  • We constructed a 15 metre diameter x 15 metre deep chamber in Glasgow
  • We installed a flood control system with a new storm storage tank
  • We increased network capacity through a planned construction programme – carried out in a busy Glasgow area
  • We managed effective stakeholder communication channels with the general public, local authority and traffic management

The Solution

Our team assisted Scottish Water by innovatively upgrading its systems including 200 metres of sewer network along with the construction of a 15-metre diameter chamber, in a busy area of Glasgow.

We implemented a new 1100m3 storm storage tank which provided sufficient capacity to deal with any future unprecedented storms and subsequent flood volume. The system returned this stormwater to the network at a controlled flow rate to alleviate any flooding in the area.

The new stormwater storage tank and increased network capacity worked to resolve flooding issues with a safe, ergonomic and environmentally compliant installation. The successful solution prevented public complaints and allowed Scottish Water to maintain its reputation.
