Celebrating Reserves Day and Armed Forces Day – June 2024

We are an Armed Forces Friendly Company, committed to supporting the Armed Forces community. We have pledged our support by signing the Armed Forces Covenant, have been awarded the Silver Award in The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) and we are working towards achieving the Gold Award.

Armed Forces Reserves Day took place on 26 June 2024 and provided an opportunity for the country to recognise our Reserve Forces. Reservists give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve as part of the military.

Defence ERS is public recognition for organisations who pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant. Avove has demonstrated this support of Armed Forces personnel with the skills and work ethic that are of huge value to employers whether a Veteran, Reservist, Spouse/Partner or a Cadet instructor. The support Avove has demonstrated since signing the Armed Forces Covenant helps provides a vital contribution to the long-term operational capability of UK Armed Forces. The support Avove give its Reserves within its organisation allows them to train and remain operationally ready to support national resilience emergencies and the Defence of the UK. I look forward to further developing the relationship with Avove and supporting them on their journey.”

Armed Forces Day, which takes place on 29 June 2024, is an annual celebration of our nation’s military – the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Airforce – and those who serve and who have served. Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for the troops and their families.

We caught up with NPG Arboricultural Surveyor and veteran, Martin Connor, who left the Army in 2018 and started tree work with a contractor for Avove. He joined Avove as a surveyor and works across the NPG account. Most recently he has worked with our Severn Trent and Yorkshire Water teams managing the vegetation removal on their projects.

Martin said: “It’s so important for personnel coming out of the Armed Forces that they are given the opportunity to connect with companies like Avove. Armed Forces personnel and their families look for companies that are Armed Forces Friendly, as you know that you will be able to get in front of key people and start the search for a job once you leave. I am also part of the Armed Forces Community of Practice and I am looking forward to being part of this team and driving our Armed Forces commitment forward.”
