Exploring Careers at Avove – Emma Johnson
We spoke to our People Partner, Emma Johnson, to share her career journey and to offer a glimpse into her experiences working for Avove.
How long have you worked for Avove?
I have been with the company for around 10 years. I started as a trainee HR Business Partner with Amey in 2015 and then transitioned over to become a People Partner at Avove when the company formed in 2022.
In a nutshell, can you summarise your career so far?
I left school at 16 and began my career at the Criminal Records Bureau. From there, I worked in a call centre and then as a receptionist, which marked the start of my journey into Human Resources. In 2015, I joined Amey as a trainee HR Business Partner after completing my CIPD Level 3 accreditation. During my time at Amey, I progressed working towards my Level 5 in Human Resource Management when I became pregnant with my daughter.
Despite the challenges of being a new mum, I continued to pursue my Level 5 during my maternity leave and returned to college for four weeks after giving birth to complete the course. Learning on the job while balancing motherhood was challenging, but I am grateful for the support I received from the business. When the company transitioned to Avove, I moved into my current role as a People Partner.
What did you see yourself doing as a career when you were younger?
I always wanted to be an air hostess because I loved the idea of traveling. However, after leaving school and starting a job, I had my eldest daughter quite young, which made that dream less feasible. I then pursued hairdressing and beauty for a while but soon realised it wasn’t the right fit for me.
Becoming a receptionist and gaining experience in Human Resources tasks helped me find the right career path. I’m glad I took that opportunity because it led me to where I am today. Interestingly, HR and being an air hostess share some similar qualities. In both roles, I get to help people, and I’ve had the chance to travel around the UK and see some wonderful places!
What does your current role at Avove involve?
I currently work on the Yorkshire Water contract, I work closely with senior leaders and managers to provide strategic HR support and drive organisational success.
I manage and resolve complex employee relations issues, including disciplinary actions and grievances. Provide guidance on performance management processes, and support managers in addressing performance issues. I also support with ensuring our policies and procedures comply with legal requirements and best practices.
What’s the best thing about working at Avove?
Working with people allows you to feel a sense of belonging and be your authentic self. It’s incredibly rewarding to be in a role that involves supporting and helping others. I also love that we are forward-thinking and take equality, diversity, and inclusion seriously. I would say that we’re an engaging company; we genuinely want the best for everyone and strive to help people reach their full potential. Additionally, I appreciate that my manager trusts me with the flexibility to balance work and childcare responsibilities.
If you could pick one highlight of your career so far with the Avove, what would it be?
Helping the company achieve the Silver Armed Forces Covenant was a massive accomplishment. Developing the initiative from scratch and attending the awards ceremony in London was incredibly rewarding. It was rewarding to know that we made a significant difference to the Armed Forces community. I am currently in the process of applying for the Gold award.
What advice would you give to somebody looking to get into your line of work?
It’s a great career for someone who is eager to learn on the job, as there are various levels to undertake. Alongside your training, you’ll gain valuable experience. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; being inquisitive is key to growing in your role.
